I’m going to have a 5 hour layover in Amsterdam next month. Is that enough time to be able to go into town?
I have a 5 hour stop in Amsterdam as I'm passing through it to another destination and I was wondering if that would give me enough time to go into the city and make it back to the airport in time for my flight. I was able to do it once a long time ago and I know Schiphol is only a short train ride away from the center of the city and if I could I would love to swing through and look around.
Do you think that will give me enough time to be able to go into town, or do you think I should just stay at the airport?

Not really. You need to check in at least two hours beforehand for your next flight. Also you can’t guarantee that the flight will arrive in time. So I would settle for some people watching, a meal and a wander round the shops. I love airports!

Mostly it takes 30 minutes to an hour between landing and leaving the airport.
In busy times it will take 2 or more hours to get through passport control and security. (Ask about the expected time before you go out.)
Add to that the hour (2 times 20 minutes plus walking and waiting time in the stations) for train travel.
That does leave you with 2 hours in town, if that much.
I would stay in the airport, not bother to get out.

I answered a similar question about a year ago.
Short answer. You’re not going to see much of Amsterdam, but…….
‘IF’ your flight arrives on time, it’s going to take you 20/30 minutes (minimum) to get to the rail station (within Schipol) or to the Taxis. Add on the journey time, about 20 minutes, then another 20 minutes back to Schipol, (this is, of course, assuming that the train or taxi leaves the moment you arrive at the rail platform or taxi rank in both directions)
Back at Schipol the ‘check-in’, because you have left the terminal, will be at least another two hours. This would mean, in the unlikely event that everything went to plan, and everything was on time you would have not much more than one and a half to two hours in Amsterdam.
Hope this helps

Oh please, that’s plenty of time. I did it on a 7 hour delay and ended up sleeping in the airport for 2 hours. Fuck these people.
