Return ticked needed for UK visitor visa application?

I'm an American student who was touring Europe last month, and mistakenly accepted a job waitressing in the UK after my employer led me to believe there would be no legal ramifications. Cut to me trying to re-enter the UK a week later after a short sojourn to Holland, and once they learned of the job I was refused entry and shipped back to Amsterdam with the infamous black stamp in my passport.

I've been told I need a visitor visa if I want to re-enter the UK. However, I'm a little confused as to what documents I need to include with my application. Apparantly a return ticket or some kind of proof of my itinerary should be included with the application-- however, keeping in mind that there's a chance I could be denied the visa after what happened before, I don't want to drop $1000 on a plane ticket to show the Powers That Be I only intend to stay a few months...just to be rejected for the visa and end up with ticket I can't even use.

Does anyone have any suggestions or advice? I consider myself to be a law-abiding citizen who made an honest mistake, and I want to do whatever I can to prove to them that my intentions are good.

You are really going to have problems travelling around Europe now with this black stamp on your passport. Republic of Ireland and the UK have not signed up to the Schengen agreement. Your entry refusal to the UK will be noted by French and Spanish and the all the EU immigration officers when you present your machine-readable passport. To get a tourist visa into the UK you need to apply at the British Embassy back in USA.But I don’t think they give it to you. When at London airport you told them about job. I bet they panic and bells were ringing when they heard you saying this.

cut your losses and do not come to UK, you will have so many problems with immigration
