Living in Madrid – Spain (salary question)?
I have been offered a financial controller & planner position at a Spanish company and will be relocating to Madrid, Spain in a few months. The company is arranging the permits & visa at the moment but I was wondering if I did a good job at negotiating. The offer is €32,000/year gross. Their accountant told me that is about €2,100/month net. I have double degrees in Finance/Management + M.S. in Finance. I am not very experienced though, just 1 year. So my question is whether I will be able to continue my standard of living in Madrid... I rent a 1 bedroom apartment in Washington DC at the moment and it is $1,200 per month. How much should I expect to pay for accommodation?
Thanks ...

I think in Madrid it can take you more or less €900 per month a 1 bedroom apartment, maybe less if you try somewhere near Madrid and not in the main city. You must have in mind that 1 € is more or less 1.50 USD, so that’s up to you. And other thing, if you buy or hire a car, surely the petrol is quite more expensive here than in the US and Madrid is a horrible city for parking. But maybe you can make it without car. Madrid has one of the best public transports in Europe. I think the public transport card is between 40 and 70 € per month, depending the zones you need, and lets you use any bus, subway or local train in the zone of your card.
Another thing. I read that you lived in DC. Well, I was there for tourism and I can tell you that Madrid is quite bigger than Washington DC.

To start: 32K is approx 1950-2000 net each month split over 14 payments (extra payment in June and December).
Accomodation is available for rent and you´ll find yourself paying between 750 and 900 Euros each month for a one bed apartment. Although they are ALOT smaller than in the US. Be prepared to work hard though. A controller position invloves a lot of stress and not a little diplomacy. You´ll have to curtail a little your ahem… good ideas. Here the boss is the boss and its a very autocratic style of management.
One thing you´ll need to investigate is the “homologacion” of your titles. Try this for more info:
This may not be necessary from the off but to sign various bank guarantees it will be required.
Now judging from your description your standard of living will be determined by how much you drink!!! After all Madrid is one of the worlds party towns!
