Where to go in a day trip from Milan, Italy ?

rent in milan

I will reach Milan at 11-30 AM on 30th Dec, 2010 from Amsterdam, and I have that day free before I start my Italy trip. I would like to touch some mountain/lake in Swiss or Italy, to get a freshness of snowy mountain or icy lake on that day. Please suggest me a nice place.
I will rent a car at Milan airport, so going to any place in a hour or two's drive will not be a problem.
Thanks in advance.

  1. Lago (Lake) Maggiore is the nearest lake to Milan and is due north of the city and the largest of the lakes and is around an hour’s drive from Linate.

Then go to Isola Bella, one of three islands in the lake where an old Italian family created a palace and gardens which are worth a visit. If you have a day the trip there and back can just be done without too much rushing, alternatively you might just choose to wander around the lake itself. However it will be mid-winter and very cold.

In Milan there are plenty of things to see – Da Vinci’s Last Supper, the Duomo, Castello Sforzesco etc and it could be a good opportunity to see these places at a time when tourism is at a low ebb.

  2. Como would be a good choice. with a car you could get around the lake and see some of the towns pretty easily. You could also consider Lago d’Orta or Lake Maggiore.

  3. Go to Pisa and straighten it out .

  4. If you don’t long to stay more time in Milan, the city itself would deserve to be visited – I don’t say the Last Supper, which has to be booked in advance, but you can see many other things like the Duomo, other churches (Sant’Ambrogio, San Lorenzo, Santa Maria delle Grazie), the Castello Sforzesco, the Pinacoteca di Brera, the Scala Theatre…
If you want to make a day trip I suggest Bergamo. The older part of this town is on the top of a mountain, it has an important artistic wealth and with snow it is especially beautiful. You can enjoy mountain atmosphere just wandering in the city. If you land in the airport Orio al Serio, you are already in Bergamo, so it would be very practical to see the city. Otherwise, Como and its lake is nice too.

  5. you may spend time in the theater La Scala

  6. From Milan you can go to Lake Maggiore.. There are three Islands.. But if you visit one its ok.. Cuz all are almost the same.. N its a small town.. U can go wallkin..

Or u can go to Lake Como.. Its supposed to be really really beautiful.. Unfortunately I have not been there yet..

Whereas in Milan, u can visit the Duomo Cathedral, the largest Gothic cathedral in the world, the Last supper by Leonardo Da Vinci (you have to make bookings atleast a month in advance!) Go window shopping all over the place..

Go to Centrale F.S (Metro station green line) n find out the nearest places by train)

To go to Switzerland you will need a different visa as it doesnt come under the schengen visa.. The closest to Switzerland is Lake Maggiore.. So u should definately go there. The station name is Stresa..

You can also visit Foxtown, a HUGE mall almost in Switzerland where you can get designer clothes for more than 70% off..
