What do I need to know about renting an apartment in Paris?
Does a 'separate toilet' mean that it is shared among the floor or is my own within the apartment? What is the difference between individual vs. collective heating?

A “separate toilet” might very well mean it is shared among those on the same floor, but it could just be an ambiguous translation that should have been translated as”private toilet.” You need to ask the landlord. Individual heating typically means there will be one or several electric heaters attached to the walls. You can control the temperature of your room and pay accordingly when you get your electricity bill. Collective heating means that the heating is controlled by the landlord and that you have pay whatever he says; the bill is included in “les charges.”
Whatever you do, read the contract very, very carefully. Many leases are three years, so make sure you know what you are committing yourself to.
