  1. I don’t think Yahoo answers is the safest way to go about this.

  2. Difficult to say. You do not talk about budget, length of stay, etc which are necessary to refer you a good source.

Difficult to answer, because rents are all over the board. You could find a small cheap place on the outskirts for 2000 RMB a month or a delux downtown suite for 20000 RMB a month.

Your best best is to plan on staying in a hotel your first few days and immediately get an agent who can help you. I do not recommend you cut any deal remotely.. and without looking at the place first. Agents who help foreigners usually only want to show the upscale places ( 8000 RMB per month up ). If you want to go cheap, you may be need to walk around the neighborhood near your school with someone who speaks chinese and look at the neighborhood real estate storefronts ( with open apartments posted in the window in chinese ) . Most places are furnished.

If you are only going to be there a few months – you may want to consider a serviced apartment. More expensive, but they take short term rentals where landlords may not. You may also consider a room share with someone else to make it cheaper

Be prepared to put down 3 months rent ( possible to negotiate but not easy if you are short term ) .

Check out – they have all kinds of listing ( rental and shares ) and shanghaiexpat has a map.
