How much does a typical 2 bedroom apartment rent for in China?
Me and my wife changed our minds, we decided instead that we want to go to Beijing. How much does it cost in Beijing for a 2 bedroom apartment. The reason we choose this was because in Beijing they speak straight Mandarin and not Shanghainese and I think Shanghainese are much more ruder then in Beijing. Plus they offer a higher salary, the olympics will be there, and it is the capital and I would love to see the forbidden city where the Last Emperor use to live.

If you move to Zhuhai, the rent is pretty cheap. Around 800 RMB.
Guangzhou is a bit more expensive.

do not teach at guangdong province, it’s not safe LOL crime rate is way too high, by crime i mean schemes LOL
two bedroom apt depending on location can vary from 800 rnb (yuan) to 1500 rnb (yuan)
i suggest shanghai and beijing b/c the housing market in china is equally bad if not worse than what’s going on in usa right now LOL but with government controlling the media, people outside china usually dont know about it…. and therefore the apartment rentals will be probably the same or similiar cost
however in shanghai and beijing, there are so many westerners, local people are used seeing westerners and will treat you guys better, but if you move to a small area where people will POINT and “oh my gosh westerner” which might make your family and especially your kid a bit anxious or weirded out LOL
i wouldn’t recommend live-in-nannies b/c there are a lot of bad reputation going on with many of them LOL if your wife doesn’t work then seriously dont get one LOL
there are a lot of kindergarden programs where they take good care of kids, many parents in china work full time (both parents) and they often leave their kids at those care centers, i konw that many care centers take in infants from 18 months and up or so, that you have to do some more research =) but i recommend this for your kid that way he/she will grow up with little chinese kids around him/her and will learn to speak chinese much easier =) and know how to speak english at home =)
and seriously speaking, the living cost in beijing is not that high, last time i were there, the hotel and food costs ect. are actually cheaper than what it was in chengdu (supposedly known for its low living cost lol)
anyways i hope this helps
just keep in mind that now is the buyer’s market, even if you are renting you will be having an upper hand =) and make sure you bargain
that’s the thing with asian countries, bargain bargain bargain =)
no one will laugh at you
took me about two weeks out of a month vacation there last time to remember how to bargain LOL hahaha
um…. if you have any more questions regarding living in china
feel free to drop me a msg or post another question on here
i’d be more than happy to help =)
good luck

I can only speak for guangzhou – a nice apartment will run you around 3,000 – 5,000 rmb. If your having a baby and will need a live-in which is probably the case then plan on a 2-3-bedroom and more towards the 4,000 – 6,000 rmb range. I know some teachers at international schools like the American international school in Guangzhou and Utahloy school that get quite a bit of help in housing. Clifford School in PanYu Clifford Estates has nice apartments and cleaner air than the city of Guangzhou so that may be a positive especially with a new-born but I heard they pay quite low. Some universities also pay and offer quite good packages for foreign teachers depending on their expertise. Guangzhou offers quite modern conveniences and great experiences. As for Nannies, if it’s a local Chinese plan on 2 if you have a baby for the first year or so. Usually 1 takes care of the baby and the other helps clean and take care of the baby once or twice a month so the main Nanny can take a day off (Monthly Salary is quite negotiable). I think you’ll like Guangzhou area better than any other place in China. I’m an American living here 14+ years and love it. Good Luck.

OK. I’d say it would be 1000-1500RMB a month. I think by ‘zhejang’ you mean ‘zhejiang’. As for a nanny, surely as parents, that’s the whole point of having a child? You bring them up and go through the hardships, not let a nanny do it. As for Beijing pre and during the Olympics, prices have gone sky high and it wouldn’t be wise to go there now to live long term, landlords are taking complete advantage of international pricing. As for Shanghai, there’s less Shanghainese being spoken now, and Mandarin is becoming standard everywhere; people who speak Shanghainese will also be able to speak Mandarin. As for the Forbidden City, you only need a day to see it, you don’t have to live there! It’s quite expensive and all you look at is empty buildings.

Personally, if I were to go teach in China, I would go to Dalian, Qingdao or Xiamen, small cities by Chinese standards, all sea-side, with nice beaches and enjoyable weather almost year-round, which is nice with a child. Rents can go anywhere from 800RMB to 3,000RMBs for a 2 or 3 bedroom apartment. Usually your school should either provide housing or help you find it. I didn’t find Shanghainese particularly rude, but I found Dalian-ese particularly friendly. Wherever you are in China, train travel is great and very cheap, so even if you live far away from Beijing, you will have the opportunity to visit the Forbidden City one time or another. China is a huge country with so many regions and geography that you will enjoy it almost anywhere. I raised 5 kids practically by myself (tiring at times…) so I don’t think you would need a live-in nanny if your wife doesn’t work. Plus, Chinese women love children -theirs as much as other people’s- and you would not have any problem finding a full time reliable babysitter if your wife wants to do something part-time or full-time. If she doesn’t work, this would be a great opportunity to learn Mandarin.
